[01] The Importance of Upskilling and Reskilling in the Modern Workplace

Introduction

The landscape of the labour market is undergoing rapid transformations propelled by technological advancements, leading to the continual emergence of novel job roles. Consequently, employees are confronted with the imperative to cultivate adaptability and acquire fresh competencies to maintain a competitive edge (Smith, 2020).

In skill development, the terms “upskilling” and “reskilling” are often utilised interchangeably, yet they convey distinct connotations. Upskilling pertains to acquiring novel proficiencies that facilitate progression within one’s occupational sphere (Jones & Brown, 2018). Conversely, reskilling encompasses the acquisition of entirely new proficiencies, enabling a seamless transition into a different professional domain (Miller et al., 2019).

The significance of upskilling and reskilling is underscored in the contemporary workplace landscape. A recent survey conducted by LinkedIn revealed that an impressive 94% of CEOs acknowledge the indispensable role of upskilling and reskilling in fostering the success of their organisations (LinkedIn, 2022). This attests to the pivotal role of these continuous learning strategies in ensuring sustained organisational efficacy and competitiveness.

As you correctly mentioned, to succeed in careers, employees must constantly upskill and reskill in today's environment of rapid technological innovation. However, a lack of tactics to encourage engineers to learn and engage with new technological practices causes many training courses to fall short of imparting the necessary information. Therefore, a proper strategy on how to empower employee skills is of paramount importance.

  8. Well done Anuradha. This is something new to learn in Sri Lankan context. However, according to Ariyarathne, D. (2021), the general manager of Pearson Lanka has stated that Sri Lanka has been using this trend of upskilling and reskilling after the pandemic situation. The global solution to upgrade and improve skills has been realised as this method. The education system also has been impacted by this method where they believe students should follow upskilling or reskilling to improve their skills before entering the job market. Especially the undergraduates have been focused and a new curriculum has been implemented using some of the activities related to this theory. Further, Fernando, et, al. (2020), states that upskilling and reskilling opportunities are scarce in the case study of an apparel company. This has impacted the organization after the pandemic situation. Moreover, the research has promoted this theory to refine the organizational process. Therefore, it is an essential HR activity in an organization to increase productivity.
